Victoria Phantharangsi

Sydney TAFE advertising graduate Victoria Phantharangsi is well on the road to career success.

As part of the Sydney TAFE Advanced Diploma of Advertising, Victoria took apart in a two week study tour in Singapore. During this tour Victoria was fortunate enough to be offered a five internship with Bartle Bogle Hegarty in Singapore. Once back in Sydney, Victoria took part in a graduate programme at global advertising agency Clemenger BBDO.

Travel & Tourism 40 years

Travel and Tourism at Sydney TAFE celebrated their 40th anniversary with guests from across the industry. Speakers included the Hon. George Souris MP, Minister for Tourism, Major Events, Hospitality and Racing and Minister for the Arts as well as Sydney TAFE graduate Justin Montgomery, Joint Managing Director of Travel the World. Attendees were able to enjoy canapes inspired by the decade when teaching first began in the 70s - so our student chefs created hedgehogs, angels on horseback and prawn cocktails to the delight of all who sampled them.

Global Learning Circle launched

A Global Learning Circle was launched at a dinner following the successful RC-2020 Global Forum.

The Global Learning Circle, will link students and teachers from participating RC-2020 institutions across the world, with clear goals to economic renewal through vocational education and training.

Fuji Taukatelata

Face of Sydney Institute, Fuji Taukatelata, chose cooking over criminology and her career in the fast-paced world of fine dining is literally taking off.

Awarded the 2012 Young Culinary Achiever Scholarship, Fuji will soon leave Sydney to take up a placement at the two star Michelin restaurant, The Ledbury. Run by Newcastle-born chef Brett Graham, The Ledbury was this week ranked 13th of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants.

Award winning arrangements

Lana Lichman - PFAAC winner

In the midst of the large crowds at this year’s Royal Easter Show, Sydney TAFE floristry graduate Lana Lichman from Art of Bloom, competed in her first ever floristry competition - Professional Florist Association Annual Competition and won.

 

Contestants were given only four hours to design numerous arrangements suitable for an exhibition’s opening night at the art gallery.

Sealight - Student Light Competition

The brief given by international furniture company IKEA is to design a new light based on sea life.

The Innovators make their mark on Australian Fashion Week!

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia may be over for another year, but for six of our graduates from Sydney TAFE’s Fashion Design Studio it marks the beginning of a brilliant career.

Fashion Design studio’s The Innovators show is a highlight on the Australian Fashion Week calendar, renowned in industry circles as the leading graduate show and as a launching pad for many of Australia’s top young designers including Dion Lee, Christopher Esber, Micaela Ezra and Romance Was Born.

Generation Next

Vikii & Nadia Warne

Design Centre Enmore graduate Nadia Warne is making her mark.

In a recent article in The Australian House and Garden Magazine, titled Generation Next, Nadia mentions how her mother has been an enormous influence in her life.

As quoted in the article, Nadia’s mother says “she (Nadia) has amazing colour sense and even when she was little she used to style and arrange things. Everything she does is beautifully conceived and balanced.”

Congratulations once again to Sydney TAFE ambassador, graduate and restaurant owner of Sydney's exclusive Marque Restaurant, Mark Best.

Marque is one of three Australian restaurants which have made a list of the world’s 100 greatest restaurants compiled by US-based Elite Traveler Magazine.

Check out sport and recreational courses

Australians now have the opportunity to study online for free through an innovative new venture, Open2Study.

Subjects are developed and taught by leading instructors from Australian universities, TAFEs and industry.

Of the 10 subjects offered, Sydney Institute has two – Financial Planning and Sport and Recreation. Open2Study is backed by Open Universities Australia (OUA) and sets out to make professional education available and accessible to anyone.

Successful global forum

International delegates at Sydney Institute

For the first time ever, the RC-2020 Forum was hosted in Australia by its only Australian member, TAFE NSW – Sydney Institute.

RC-2020 members account for more than 1.5 million students in the United States, United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, Canada and Australia.  The Forum heard how vocational education is impacting economies in the wake of the global financial crisis.

Institute Director, David Riordan, said TAFE NSW attracted more than 550,000 enrolments, including 6,000 international students.

Reaching out with Outreach

Hyeon Yoon and Christine Austin

Hyeon Yoon took a big step in 2010 and enrolled in Outreach at St George College.

Having arrived from Korea in 2000 and the mother of two primary school children, she wanted to gain employment but faced several barriers.

Last year she completed her Certificate IV in Community Services Work, and as part of her work placement found a job. Now enrolled in the Diploma of Welfare part-time, Hyeon hopes to complete this mid 2013.

Celebrating International Women’s Day

Randwick TAFE celebrated International Women’s Day on 8 March with a lunch and notable female speakers.

Sponsored by First State Super, the lunch brought together guests across a broad range of industries including McGrath Real Estate, White Lady Funerals, Jetstar and Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu.

Entertaining and informative Patricia Curtin spoke on Superannuation and Women followed by a Meditation Session with Tami Roos.

From mentoring program to employment

Tasting success, chefs, mentoring program, Sydney TAFE, Kylie Kwong,

Recent Commercial Cookery graduate Lucy Williams – Moore is now working for well known chef, restaurateur, author and television presenter Kylie Kwong, in the kitchen of her flag ship restaurant Billy Kwong.

As part of the mentoring program for female apprentice chefs ‘Tasting Success’, Lucy was paired with Kylie Kwong. This year Kylie will mentor another Sydney TAFE student Tina Nguyen.

Lord Mayor welcomes international students

Our newly arrived international students were given a wonderful welcome to Sydney by Lord Mayor, Clover Moore, at the annual Lord Mayor’s Welcome to International Students event, held in the Town Hall on Tuesday 12 March.

This is the first time Sydney TAFE international students have participated in the event which previously only included international students studying at universities.

International Client Relations Manager, Jane Anderson, who enjoyed the evening with our students remarked on the significance of the occasion.

Design Centre Enmore TAFE students graduate with degrees

For the first time ever, ten people graduated with a Bachelor Degree in 3D Art and Animation from TAFE NSW.

The graduates, all from Sydney TAFE’s Design Centre Enmore, joined their colleagues who graduated with a Bachelor of Design (Interior Design) Degree or an Associate Degree in 3D Art and Animation.

Speaking at the graduation held in Parliament House, Managing Director of TAFE NSW, Pam Christie said you could see the joy in the faces of the students.

What do a sign writer, an artist, a co-ordinated assistant and an ex teacher all have in common?

They’re women who have discovered a passion for vehicle trimming.

 

 

Why learn vehicle trimming?

Jodene Marino, co-ordinated assistant for Fuji Xerox said she always had a love of cars.

On Monday nights she studies panel beating at Sydney TAFE and on Wednesday nights she is studying her Certificate II in Automotive Vehicle Body (Vehicle Trimming).

“Both courses are hands on,” Jodene said.

Tasting success is sweet

A mentoring program for female apprentice chefs is continuing to support young women entering the industry.

Run since 2007, Tasting Success had its 2013 launch with another nine women paired with high profile mentors.

Sydney TAFE Director David Riordan said it was a wonderful thing to hear early on a Monday morning that a participant was “giddy with excitement”!

Hannah Holden had just found out her mentor was to be Peter Gilmore of Quay restaurant.

London bound

Tameka Allard receiving her SPARK AWARD

St George College graduate Tameka Allard is off to England having won the prestigious SPARK AWARD.

The competition, open to graphic design students across NSW attracted nearly 100 entries.

As the winner, Tameka has a three month internship with Blue Marlin Brand Design in their London studio, all expenses paid and $4,000 spending money.

Tameka, who completed her Diploma of Graphic Design last year, hopes to be jetting off in July.

“I am so thrilled to be awarded this incredible opportunity,” Tameka said.

Ambassador wins major art prize

Sydney TAFE Ambassador Louis Pratt Mt Buller Sculpture Prize Art Design Centre

Congratulations to Sydney TAFE Ambassador and teacher Louis Pratt on winning the inaugrual Mt Buller Sculpture Prize. 

Louis receives a cash prize of $100,000 and the work will be permanently sited on the mountain, becoming the first piece in the Mt Buller Sculpture Park.

The newly established biennial $100,000 Mt Buller Sculpture Award is one of Australia’s most valuable arts prizes.

Voyeur is made using laser scan data, software and 3D printing to finally be moulded and constructed in steel and fibreglass.

A first for the swimming pool and spa industry

Employees working in the swimming pool and spa after-market industry will be able to gain relevant qualifications for the first time through TAFE NSW – Sydney Institute.

Sydney TAFE’s Sutherland College will offer both a Certificate III and Certificate IV in Swimming Pool and Spa Service.

TAFE Business Account Manager, Renée McGuinness approached the industry last year and found out the Construction and Property Services Industry Skills Council (CPSISC), was working on developing qualifications.

Paving the path to success

As a single mum with a background in retail, Gilda knew she wanted more for her then two year old daughter and in fact herself.

“I needed to learn how to use a computer, so did a basic computer course at St George TAFE” says Gilda De Marcellis, “After completing my first course at TAFE, I then went onto complete my Diploma of Financial Services in Financial Planning.”

Korea and Sydney TAFE combine resources

TAFE NSW – Sydney Institute will deliver training in Korea this year, having signed an historic agreement with the Seoul Hyundai Occupational Training College.

The agreement was signed by Sydney TAFE Director David Riordan and Seoul Hyundai Occupational Training College President Kim, Nam Gyeon.

Director, International Relations at Sydney TAFE, Heather Roberts said initially English language pathway programs would be offered, with the potential to offer more courses ranging from certificates to advanced diplomas.

Following the beat of a different drum

Lindy Morrison is not only a passionate musician, she’s also passionate about people’s rights.

The Ultimo music teacher’s passion has been rewarded with the Order of Australia Medal for performance and advocacy in music.

Lindy, known worldwide as the drummer for the Australian band the Go Betweens, which had international success in the 1980s, is an outspoken advocate for musicians’ welfare.

“I was really happy and surprised to get this award,” Lindy said.

“It is very humbling.

Sydney TAFE tops HSC subjects

Sydney TAFE students are dux of the state in two HSC subjects in 2012.

Fort Street High School student George Bishop who studied Accounting at Petersham College came top in the state.

Fellow Fort Street and Petersham student Jack Willis-Craig came fifth in the state.

Endeavour Sports High School student Samantha McAlpine topped the state in Tourism and Events Examination after studying the subject at Sutherland College-Loftus Campus.

Training to be a super hero

IPROWD students graduate at Eora College

Aboriginal graduate Ashley Gordon is well on the way to achieving her childhood dream of becoming a super hero.

Ashley was one of 10 students who graduated from the Indigenous Police Recruitment Our Way Delivery (IPROWD)  program at Eora College on 13 December 2012. She is hopeful to gain entry to the NSW Police Academy in Goulburn.

IPROWD is a joint program between TAFE NSW, NSW Police Force, Charles Sturt University and the Australian Federal Government.

Making coffee brings results

Cafe Diversity students

A partnership with Petersham College, Marrickville High School’s Intensive English Centre and the Marrickville Metro Migrant Resource Centre is paying dividends for Marrickville’s refugee students.

Cafe Diversity, which was officially launched last month, helps the students gain skills to attain part-time work to support their living expenses as they resettle in Australia.

The idea of the cafe began two years ago.

Marine training facility helps fill the skills gap

TAFE NSW – Sydney Institute has launched a five-day Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) training program utilising the state-of-the-art marine simulator at Ultimo College, Sydney. The facility is just one of two simulators in NSW approved by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA), the accreditation body for maritime training courses.

Screen printing students recognised internationally

Students win international awards

Screen printing students from Ultimo College are currently enjoying international industry recognition thanks to winning two categories in the esteemed Tom Frecska Student Printing Competition.

The awards judged by the Academy of Screen Printing Technology (ASPT) in the USA, were set up to honour student superior imaging work within a variety of categories.

Student wins international prize!

Joshua Lunny from Ultimo College has won second prize in the visual merchandising category of the 2012 International PAVE Gala student competition.

This renowned international competition is open to students who are studying retail planning, visual merchandising, and branding programs and is an excellent opportunity for students to obtain real-life retail design experience on an international level.

Fran Hughes, Head Teacher of Children’s Services at Randwick College was recognised for her outstanding contribution to quality education at the inaugural Minister’s Quality Teaching Awards held on Tuesday 20 November.
The Awards acknowledge that quality teaching by quality teachers is the key to success in our  schools and TAFE institutes.

Another win - International Trainer of the Year

Sydney Insitute's excellence in training has been recognised once again at the Australian Training Awards held on 16 November in Melbourne. We won the International Training Provider of the Year Award in an extremely competitive environment against Australia's leading vocational education providers.

Outstanding award for graduate

Graduate, Jenny-Lee Stefas has won the award for Outstanding Contribution to Regional Tourism by an Individual at the 2012 NSW Tourism Awards. Jenny studied both Tourism and Business at Sydney TAFE and is now working as the Tourism Manager at Sutherland Shire Council.

It is the second time her tourism program has won an award, earlier this year her work was recognised at the Local Tourism Awards.

Building confidence through garden project

Lillian’s Edible Garden comes alive with a little help from our students!

A group of students studying the Diploma of Youth Work at Ultimo College have been working with a local youth refuge to create an edible garden for the residents to maintain and use. The project aims to develop opportunities for the group of young people to get involved with their local environment, promote a healthier lifestyle, and gain a sense of achievement and pride among residents.

Culinary scholarship takes Fuji to London

Apprentice wins 2012 Young Culinary Achiever Scholarship

Ultimo College student Fuji Taukatelata has won the 2012 Young Culinary Achiever Scholarship Award. The third-year commercial cookery apprentice who works at the Campbelltown Golf Club has won prizes including work experience in London with Australian chef Brett Graham at his 2-star Michelin restaurant The Ledbury, $1,000 spending money, airfares and accommodation.

Students raise $10,000 for charity

A group of Diploma of Events students has raised more than $10,000 for the charity organisation, Youth off the Streets. The fundraising was through three events around Halloween which attracted 330 paying guests.

The events were:

  • Halloween Murder Mystery
  • Music through the Ages Trivia
  • Hollywood Nonsense Trivia

The charity has another connection to Sydney TAFE: the current events assistant for Youth off the Streets, Cheryl Johnson, obtained her Diploma of Events here. Cheryl attended all of the events to profile the charity.

Graduate finalist in Project Runway

Sydney TAFE graduate Jamie Ashkar has got through to the final top 7 in this season's Project Runway. After completing a Diploma in Fashion at St George College he set up his own company, Jamie Ashkar.

The name behind the self titled label is a 23 year old Sydney based designer, who has set upon building a successful career in the fashion industry. As a former interior designer he is making the seamless transition from designing spaces to designing original garments.

National Geographic photographer visits Ultimo College

 Thursday 1st November saw over 350 guests - students, graduates and others come together and enjoy an amazing evening with international photographer, Amy Toensing.

Guests were truly inspired, as Amy openly shared much of her journey with them. This event was organised by Sydney TAFE with the Australian Centre for Photography's HeadOn Festival.

Sydney Institute won 3 Gold, 1 Silver, 3 Bronze and the People’s Choice Award at the 2012 TAFE NSW Innovation and Excellence Showcase awards ceremony held at the Convention Centre, Darling Harbour, 8 November 2012.

TAFE NSW, industry partners and special guests come together to celebrate and acknowledge the ongoing contribution of staff in creating innovative outcomes in vocational education and training. The awards went to outstanding projects undertaken by TAFE NSW in association with industry, government and community organisations.

Masters Media Methods - a night of life drawing

On Wednesday the 24th October, over 150 Sydney TAFE graduates and students enjoyed an evening of drawing, painting, animation and discussion at the Design Centre Enmore.

Seven very different artists came together to demonstrate their skills and share their knowledge with the audience. This extremely creative event gave guests the opportunity to sketch and learn, whilst networking with other alumni now working in the design industry.

Applied Management degree information session

Thanks to a new partnership between Sydney Institute and the University of Ballarat, students have the opportunity to study the Bachelor of Applied Management  degree on campus at St George College from 2013.

The new agreement means that students will complete their 3 year study program at St George College where they will complete the Diploma and Advanced Diploma of Management courses and then advance into the Bachelor of Applied  Management in their final year.

IKEA Showcase student designs

Students showcase  their talent through the IKEA Tempe Chair Competition.

More than 100 students studying the Certificate IV in Design course at Design Centre Enmore got the opportunity to put their practical and creative skills to the test when they entered the IKEA Tempe chair design completion. 

Created through a partnership between IKEA and Design Centre Enmore, the competition invited students to redesign the IKEA basic pine chair keeping 50% of the original chair in any form of shape using a theme with this year's being Phobia!

The Art of Food exhibition is a feast for the eyes presenting the work of award winning photographer and Sydney Institute Ambassador, Penelope Beveridge. Gourmet food, stunning locations and the "rock stars" of the restaurant world are featured in this exhibition. Celebrity chefs include icon Margaret Fulton, the gastronomic godfather Tony Bilson and Ready Steady Cook TV celebrity Andy Ball.

Festival helps build industry experience

Sydney TAFE students volunteered at the Sydney Running Festival

A group of event students from Sutherland College, Loftus Campus volunteered to work behind the scenes at the Blackmore’s Sydney Running Festival held in the CBD on Sunday 16 September.

Now in its sixth year, the event attracts more than 35,000 runners who participate in a range of races across the day. More than 50 of our students were involved in recruiting and managing volunteers on the day as well acting as course marshalls along some of the busiest parts of the route including: The Rocks, Circular Quay and the Sydney Opera House.

2012 Theatre Costume showcase

Students from the Diploma of Costume for Performance course at Ultimo College have once again come up with the goods in their end-of-year theatre showcase held at Turner Hall from 13-14 September.

Showcasing their high-level technical training in costume making and millinery, the 2012 graduating class presented their major works alongside creations made by teams of first and second year students.

Great Waiters Race

Sydney TAFE hospitality students winners at Great Waiters Race

Hospitality, events, and music students and teachers from Ultimo College were once again part of the action at the Sydney Great Waiters Race held at Woolloomooloo Bay Wharf on Sunday 2 September.

Based on the traditional race from Paris, which started at the beginning of the 20th century, the Sydney event attracted a large number of spectators who cheered on the waiters as they made their way around the one kilometre route.

Congratulations go to six Sydney Institute students who have been shortlisted for this year’s state training awards. The annual awards are organised by state governments to help promote vocational education and training (VET).

Randwick graduate earns early education accolade

Sydney Institute – Randwick graduate Talia Bernstein has been named the Randwick and South Sydney Family Day Care Australia Educator of the Year. Talia started the centre in North Bondi one year ago, she believes that children younger than two find it beneficial to be in smaller, intimate groups.

Flair for fashion!

Nearly half of this year’s famous Flair Awards  – Australia’s leading fashion accolades outside the capital cities – have been won by students at Sydney Institute’s Fashion Design Studio at Ultimo College.

Head Teacher Nicholas Huxley accepted nine of the 19 awards on behalf of his students at the glitzy showcase on Saturday night in Taree on the mid north coast of NSW.

Making movies in New York

A group of Sydney Institute film students have had the time of their lives on a study tour to The Big Apple.

From rubbing shoulders with the stars on the red carpet to shooting scenes for their very own short film in Central Park, it was an experience the Randwick College students will never forget.

While in the city that never sleeps the group attended a number of Tribeca Film Festival events which were taking place at the same time, including talks by Robert De Niro and Judd Apatow, as well as Susan Sarandon and Michael Moore.

Eora College graduation

More than 100 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have graduated from Sydney Institute’s Eora College in Chippendale.

The 117 graduates studied various courses at the community-focused college, from certificates in general education and arts and media to diplomas of Aboriginal studies and music.

Special awards were also given to 15 graduates for outstanding achievement.

Nearly 40 Sydney Institute students have been awarded for their outstanding achievements.

At our annual Student Excellence Awards last week, 22 students (most of which are pictured right) were commended in front of their family, friends, teachers and sponsors.  Between them they’ve secured international internships, gained industry recognition, started their own businesses and one carpentry apprentice has even helped rebuild a tsunami-struck village in Samoa, all thanks to their studies at Sydney TAFE.

Six female students from Design Centre Enmore made TAFE NSW history on 27 March graduating from the inaugural TAFE NSW bachelor degree – the Bachelor of Design (Interior Design).

 

Students celebrated this milestone at NSW Parliament House surrounded by teachers, families and distinguished guests including The NSW Minister for Education, Adrian Piccoli MP who officially launched TAFE NSW Higher Education at the intimate ceremony that saw TAFE and university academics come together to share this momentous occasion.

Visual splendour in New York

Students visit New York for Visual Merchandising Week story

Twelve visual merchandising students from Ultimo College got to experience Christmas season in New York, 'a dream come true for industry folk', while participating in a study tour in December 2011.

Organised by Kerry Little, Head Teacher of Visual Merchandising, the study tour incorporated a host of events designed to expose students to global trends and practices in visual merchandising and to assist students in developing global capability and competitiveness.

Sydney Institute’s Ultimo College recently hosted the Serge Ferrari Trade Day. This two-day Marine and Motor trimmers workshop was organised in conjunction with Innova and Bainbridge to introduce businesses to the latest styles and processes in marine trimming used in the U.S.A. The guest speaker of the workshop was trimmer specialist, Steve Szenay who was flown in especially from the US by Serge Ferrari to share his latest techniques in trimming.
